Green Defenders! 🌿💚🦸🏽‍♀️🦸🏾‍♂️

Today, Heroes teamed up with @swmcol_tt and other NGOs to clean up the banks of the Caroni River.

During the 2022 rainy season, local residents banded together to clean the river to prevent further flooding. However, due to the high river levels, it proved an immense challenge.

With the dry season here, the time is right to begin preparing ourselves for the upcoming wet season by cleaning our river courses and beaches to prevent flooding.

It's our responsibility to keep the environment clean. The nasty behaviours of littering and dumping garbage in the environment must stop! We have to work together to ensure we have a cleaner, greener society for the future generation.

At the Commonwealth Heads of Government Meeting in

At the Commonwealth Heads of Government Meeting in 2022, Leaders declared 2023 as a year dedicated to youth-led action for sustainable and inclusive development.

Today our CEO, Lawrence J. Arjoon, joined the Parliament of Trinidad and Tobago to celebrate #Commonwealth Day by discussing #Youth, #Innovation and #Sustainability.

A summary of the key points raised by Lawrence included:

1. "You do not water a plant for one day and expect it to grow well for the rest of its life." Interventions must be long-term and evidence-based to have a sustainable impact. This is why the Heroes Development Programme is a 3 year programme built with an analysis of the problem affecting children and youth, and focuses on psychosocial development and sustainability education around equality and the elimination of violence, energy and environmental sustainability, and personal and career development. It's an evidence-based, strengths-based intervention for the issues seen today.

2. Youth development is real work and requires real resources to get done well. Not only money, but competencies. Heroes is able to operate by leveraging donations from partners with a team of competent, experienced professionals in fields including technology, psychology, neuropsychology, and education to deliver meaningful long-term interventions. The challenges we see are not a problem for Government alone to fix, but for the whole of society to fix. Every single part of society contributes to the issues seen today and to what is in place, supported, and funded to develop young people.

3. Youth empowerment and inclusion must be meaningful and sustained. Children and youth voices must be included in decision-making as they help better identify causes and solutions to problems. The Heroes Board took a bold step in appointing a 30-year-old CEO, which allowed us to transition quickly to digital in the pandemic. We established a youth advisory team to support our organisational transition and programme redevelopment, and the Chair of that team, at 17 years old, was appointed to the Heroes Board. This sort of collaboration is critical to #SustainableDevelopment.

Helping children understand how to prevent, report, and respond to forest fires is extremely important for islands like Trinidad and Tobago.

Today, local and migrant children enjoyed learning about reforestation and environmental conservation as part of our HDP Energy and Environmental Sustainability curriculum.
